The perfect spice: BACON!

Grass fed burgers, beef filets, and the "spice"!

I have gotten into what I feel is a very positive habit; that of grilling about a weeks' worth of meat on my day off, usually Sunday.  But, today being a rainy Wednesday, I enjoyed putting this little ensemble together!

The thing about bacon is, it is relatively cheap, it adds a lot of good fat, which adds a LOT of great flavor, and it goes with anything- fish, fowl, beef, or even PORK! (fancy that!)

And afterwards, after you've eaten some of the meat for supper, you have a lot of bacon to save! (If you've eaten some already, fine... but I usually save most of it).

Along with your morning (free range!) eggs, you now have grilled bacon to heat up briefly in the microwave!  Trust me- this makes for a breakfast that you will dream about.  Just add some coffee with real whipped cream, sweetened with stevia and topped with cinnamon, and you are not only fortified for many hours that day, but also loaded down with beneficial nutrients!
Add in a Paleo smoothie, and you might not have to eat at ALL that day, if you get too busy!  (And I guarantee you won't miss the toast, muffin, or whatever other harmful filler you used to think was necessary!)

The Hunt!

Right now, I am grilling!
There is a rainstorm outside; I know very well, since I was out in it!
Why, you may ask?  Well, on Sundays I like to work out "heavy", meaning in the basement.  I use my power rack to press against full-out in "aerobic isometrics", doing slow, isometric-type movements that simulate chins, dips, and military presses, against a bar at various levels in the rack.  Usually now for one minute at a time "under load".  Strenuous, to say the least!

I also do elevated, full-range pushups on chairs, chins and dips for high reps, leg lifts, hyper-extensions, grip work, and hack squats, leaning far back in the rack to take the strain off my knees (and glutes!), leg raises, and a few other weird exercises that I promise I will detail at length soon! (I really like them, and they work very well for me!)  They are good at alleviating "injury-prone" zones, and work the muscle well, and quickly- the whole deal takes me about 35 to 40 minutes total.
I wind up with Tim Ferris' )of Four Hour Body fame's kettle bell swings- I do 75 reps, as he recommends, and have for some time now.  I have a kettle bell I built out of pipe, which is adjustable, and it really is the bomb!
If there is one exercise to get the whole body, this is it!!
Then, I did bare-foot sprinting in the yard; about 50 yards at a time.  It had started raining, and I almost gave it up, but then- Hey!  the rain feels kind of good on my bare shoulders- very cooling!

My point in all of this?

I have vegetable shish kebabs grilling right now.  I will add grass-fed beef filets and scallops shortly.  I am sipping red wine as I write this post...

I feel great, and I know NOTHING I do this coming week will
be even one iota as hard!!

I think this is a valuable point: after exerting yourself really hard; giving it your ALL, it puts everything else in modern life in perspective.

The stresses we all undergo each week, after simulating the HUNT as I just did- the chase, the kill, the sheer physical exertion that our ancestors necessarily underwent, and that we should for our own physical (and mental!) well being-

Well, our modern stressors are put into perspective.  Very underwhelming; almost easy in comparison.

And now, I will really enjoy the feast!

Time to go baste the vegetables in coconut oil, tribespeople!

My current Paleo Smoothie recipe- excerpt from "Paleo Quick Start"

The Paleo Smoothie
This is really a lynch pin of this book!  The Paleo Smoothie is not only incredibly convenient, it is also very tasty, filling, and fast and easy!
This one piece of information is worth more than the cost of this book.
If you do only one “Paleo” idea, this will give you such a jump-start, that you won’t even recognize yourself after a few months.  This is also a great time saver- use it as a total breakfast, lunch, or both!
After you drink a Paleo Smoothie, you will be so satisfied, both hunger-wise and nutrient-wise, that the rest of the day’s eating will be...
optional!
Here is a Paleo Smoothie, just before blending:
Doesn’t that look yummy?
It truly is!
And the nutrients are “off the charts” for what your body needs!!
pastedGraphic.pdf
Quick Paleo Smoothie ingredients list:
My current recipe- variations are not only possible, but encouraged!  But the base outlined here is very representative of a transformative replacement meal/ultimate real food supplement in one tasty drink!
Coconut Milk- 1 can
Carlson’s or Nordic Naturals Cod liver oil- 1 Tablespoon
Powdered kelp- 1 teaspoon
Unsweetened almond milk- 1/4 cup
Unsweetened kefir- 1/4 cup
Organic, unsweetened lemon juice- 1 teaspoon
Apple cider vinegar- 1 teaspoon
1-2 cups of green tea
Frozen spinach- approximately 1 cup
Frozen mixed “California Mix” vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots), ~1 cup
Frozen mixed berries- blueberries, raspberries, strawberries- 1 cup
1/2 banana (I freeze mine so they don’t over-ripen)
1 peeled orange
  • That’s it!  You can also “mix and match” with fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables you have on hand- cranberries are a favorite of mine, as is liquid vitamin D in the Winter months!
I also recommend here that you buy a Vitamix brand high speed blender!  This appliance will liquify pretty much whatever you throw into it, and will last virtually forever!
New or used- get yourself a Vitamix as soon as possible-
You can eat paleo without it, but it’s a LOT harder!

"Triage" effect of inadequate, nutrient poor Standard American Diet!

Here is a quote from Danny Roddy's blog- I think this guy is really on to something!--------

According to Professor Bruce Ames from the University of California, Berkeley, our short-term survival is achieved by prioritizing the allocation of scarce micro-nutrients. He believes that this "triage theory" has enormous implications for human health and aging.
Triage theory explains that age-related diseases like hair loss, heart disease, cancer, and dementia may be unintended consequences of mechanisms that engender human survival to protect against episodic vitamin and mineral shortages.
Such deficiencies would decay all "non-essential systems" but allow critical metabolic functions, such as ATP production, intact," explained Prof Ames in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Professor Ames is also a senior scientist at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI).

The 4 Hour Body by Tim Ferriss

I promised I would review the 4 Hour Body, and here I am, at last to do so!

As Tim Ferriss himself points out, this is a book not meant to be read cover to cover- it is more of a reference book about physical stuff- albeit a "crazy" sort of reference book, written for a younger audience for sure, and so much more "alternative".  Think of The Whole Earth Catalog, but then, if you know what that was, I guess you're not so young after all, so you'll know exactly what I mean by "alternative".

Not to say that this book doesn't have useful, even essential information- it surely does!  Who wouldn't like to know how to best lose fat, build muscle, and eliminate prior injuries?  It's just that, in addition to those instructions, which are extensive, and actually quite perceptive and ahead of the curve by a mile!, he also has chapters about Holding your breath for 5 minutes!  and Adventures in Tripling Sperm Count.  Although I'm sure there is an avid target audience for those chapters, and some even more esoteric ones; I'll let you discover those when you read the book, since I really think you should!

This book has TONS of really useful, really accurate advice!  And, it all comes "pre-tested" by Tim, as he is a "human guinea pig"! (He so attests himself!)  He really puts himself through all of these "quests", and walks the walk of really doing what he is talking about in his book!  Very unusual, in this day of "armchair pundits"...
The Kettlebell Swing in his chapter "Building the perfect Posterior" has to be a classic version of cutting to the chase- letting you know the one exercise that will give you the very most in terms of results!  (I've started doing it on a regular basis- that alone was worth the cost of the book!)

But then, I know a lot of what he is talking about from first hand experience.  And, from that, I know that what he is talking about overall is right on the money!  Paleo Diet (He calls it "slow burn", and adds in beans).  In fact, as an AVID Paleo fan, I heard him on the podcast "The Paleolithic Solution" with Robb Wolf- that's how an old dude like me even heard about the book!

He knows about Arthur Jones and Nautilus, Ken Hutchins and Superslow training, the Casey Viator experiment that packed 63 pounds of muscle onto an already advanced bodybuilder in 28 days!, and lots more that occurred at a time when he was too young to have known about it directly.

And he replicated the same protocol onto himself, with similar (and even more visually striking) results!

Not your usual how-to book.
I recommend this book to all!  Although I believe mainly (young) men will buy it, due to it's provocative book jacket and marketing, I think women, and especially older women and men would have the very most
to gain from what information he offers.

Go thee and read!  (But not the whole thing at once)

Primal, paleo, healing diet- why all different?

Here is the way I usually start my day. (After exercising, that is!)  It's actually a double espresso that I make in my "Aerobie" coffee press, topped with real, organic whipped cream (whipped via Kitchenaid mixer in background), sweetened slightly with stevia, and sprinkled with the excellent anti-oxidant cinammon!    And then, of course, my trusty barbarian smoothie, that actually satisfies just about every nutritional need of my body for the entire day!  But you all know about that, from prior posts...

Today, I thought I'd write an answer to my tiny little brother, who shall remain nameless.  He emailed me from his iPhone, asking about Dr. Josh Axe, who along with Mark Sisson and his Primal Blueprint, and Robb Wolfe and his Paleolithic Solution, and Loren Cordain and his Paleo Diet- well, they are all somewhat the same, BUT they also all have their differences.  When you really start getting into eating in this natural way that our forebears ate for many thousands of years, well, you just want to get it right!

The point is, all of these "gurus of health" are way more similar than they are different.  Although Josh Axe is biblically based, and so eliminates pork and shellfish from his healing diet, and also includes beans, otherwise he is quite paleo/primal.  Loren Cordain says "No" to dairy, and Mark Sisson says grass fed butter and heavy cream are great.  Robb Wolfe loves coffee, and Dr. Axe says it's bad.

The truth is, everyone will come up with their own version.  The Barbarian Diet works for me- I imagine I am a Germanic or Celtic barbarian, living on the outskirts of decadent Rome, eating the way my forebears always ate, but learning from the Romans without being sucked into their self-destructive civilized ways.  So, dairy is fine for me, at least with grass fed cows.  I don't drink milk, but enjoy butter, full fat cheese and kefir, yogurt, and cream.

The one thing is, eliminate all fake, processed, manufactured foods!
This means things like margarine, corn oil, all hydrogenated fats like Crisco (cottonseed oil!  Are we equipped to eat cotton plants??), and all wheat, flour, and sugar!!

Sugar is the "fertilizer of cancer".  Flour turns immediately into sugar, right in your mouth! Think about your dental health with this one...

Also, eliminate all medications.  They ALL have really bad, long-term side effects; this includes so-called "benign" drugs like aspirin!  Tylenol is poison to your liver, and the Statin drugs are the worst!  One side effect of statins is cancer! Quite a "side effect"!

Oh yes, all soda pop is just awful- this includes "diet" pops, with chemical artificial sweeteners.

So, it really is pretty simple- eat like your great great great grandparents ate- real food.  You won't believe how much better you'll look, feel, and perform!

Death by Conventional Medicine!

I'll bet you never heard of this before- the leading cause of death in the U.S. is... conventional medicine!  That's right- read on: this is an excellent article by Dr. Josh Axe!

Conventional Medicine is the Leading Cause of Death

Close-up of RX prescription and stethoscope
You may have thought cancer or heart disease takes the lives of more Americans than any other illness or event. But conventional medicine is actually the leading cause of death today!
Iatrogenesis is known as the “inadvertent and preventable induction of disease or complications by the medical treatment or procedures of a physician or surgeon.”

Health Care in America Today

The Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) was created by Congress to analyze scientific and technical issues in America. From 1972 to 1995, the OTA conducted studies on health care, pollution and other such topics.
After producing an unfavorable report of US health care, the agency was disbanded by Congress.
The OTA’s 1995 report on health care found that:
  • Life expectancy in the US was among the lowest in developed countries
  • Infant mortality rates in the US are poor
  • Technology in US medicine is expensive and unrestrained
  • 67% of physicians in the US in 1990 were specialists
  • The drug industry exacerbates health care costs while new drugs rarely provide more benefit than old
  • The FDA doesn’t consider the effectiveness of new treatments or compare new products to old
  • The FDA does not consider non-drug alternatives
  • The pre- and post-approval processes for drugs is lacking
The report concluded with these statements:
“Only 10-20% of all procedures used in medical practice have been shown to be efficacious by controlled trial,” and “There are no mechanisms in place to limit dissemination of technologies regardless of their clinical value.”
The Nutrition Institute of America funded an independent review of “government-approved” medicine that was published in 2006. Professors Gary Null and Dorothy Smith, along with doctors Carolyn Dean, Martin Feldman and Debora Rasio titled the report “Death by Medicine.”
The researchers found that America’s leading cause of death isn’t heart disease or cancer: its conventional medicine. They found that the iatrogenic death rate in the US (death caused by doctors and/or medical treatments) is 783,936 a year. That’s 84,059 more deaths than those caused by heart disease in 2001 and 230,865 more deaths than those caused by cancer.
Over a decade, the scientists predict that iatrogenic deaths will total about 7.8 million, “more than all the casualties from all the wars fought by the US throughout its entire history,” a death rate equivalent to that caused by six jumbo jets falling out of the sky every day.
They also believe the numbers are actually much higher because most iatrogenic deaths aren’t reported as such: only 5 to 20% of iatrogenic deaths are reported for fear of lawsuits and because codes for reporting deaths due to drug side effects and other medical errors don’t even exist in many cases. The number of deaths due to conventional medicine may be 20 times higher than the numbers depicted here.
The study authors, using the most conservative statistics they could find, broke down iatrogenic deaths over ten years as following:
Adverse Drug Reactions 1.06 million
Medical Error 0.98 million
Bedsores 1.15 million
Hospital Infections 0.88 million
Malnutrition in Health Care 1.09 million
Outpatients 1.99 million
Unnecessary Procedures 371,360
Surgery-related 320,000
The “Death by Medicine” doctors also took a look at unnecessary medical care over the course of a decade. They found that 89 million people are hospitalized unnecessarily each year and that 17 million iatrogenic events will occur among this number. 75 million Americans receive unnecessary medical procedures over a decade, 15 million of which result in an iatrogenic event. 164 million people will receive unneeded medical treatment within a decade.
So what’s behind these death rates and adverse events? Profit, politics, defensive medicine, lack of research on treatments, one-size-fits-all drugs, lack of doctor-patient time and the abuse and overmedication of our elderly are all culprits.

Conflicts of Interest

Former editor of the New England Journal of Medicine Dr. Marcia Angell has written that pharmaceutical stock and other financial incentives for scientists are twisting medical research and science altogether to suit business goals.
Not only do such credible journals accept studies from researchers with conflicts of interest, when a drug company funds a study, ABC News found that there is a 90% chance that the drug will be deemed effective compared to the 50% rate of this conclusion when a study isn’t funded by a pharmaceutical company.
The US General Accounting Office found that “of the 198 drugs approved by the FDA between 1976 and 1985…102 (or 51.5%) has serious post-approval risks,” including “heart failure, myocardial infarction, anaphylaxis, respiratory depression and arrest, seizures, kidney and liver failure, severe blood disorders, birth defects and fetal toxicity, and blindness.”

Antibiotics

Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that 90% of upper respiratory infections are viral; more than 40% of the 50 million prescriptions written each year for antibiotics are prescribed for such infections. Antibiotics have no effect on viruses and the overuse of antibiotics has likely led to the drug-resistant superbugs and the 88,000 deaths due to hospital infections every year.
The CDC does not report on the research that supports nutraceuticals for viral infections and immune system strengthening that could lessen antibiotic abuse, the study authors lament.
Hospitals receive funding based on how many beds they fill. This fact, and the fact that doctors practice defensive medicine to protect themselves from lawsuits, results in unnecessary hospitalizations and many unnecessary screenings and treatments.

Unnecessary Treatments

The media often drives unnecessary treatments and the prescribing of unneeded drugs. While cosmetic surgeries may number the greatest of these, cesarean sections, cardiac surgeries, endoscopies, back surgeries and pain-relieving surgeries are vastly over-used.
Dr. Barbara Starfield reports that the overuse of technology creates a “cascade effect” in treating patients: unnecessary outpatient treatment often leads to more visits, more prescriptions, more hospitalizations and deaths.
X-rays, CT scans, mammograms and other such diagnostics are costly and cumulatively dangerous, yet they are given regularly to soothe patient fears and often lead to unnecessary surgeries.
Pregnant women used to have x-rays regularly until a study found that they increased death in children from cancer by 40%.
Coronary angiography, the use of radiation to look at blood vessels and the heart, is another widely practiced diagnostic whose effects are unknown.
Dr. John Goffman believes that x-rays, CT scans, mammography and fluoroscopy contribute to 75% of the new cancers diagnosed every year and increases in heart disease. He believes that ionizing radiation will cause 100 million premature deaths from 2006 to 2016.
Orthopedic surgeon Dr. John Sarno says that many back surgeries are based on abnormal x-rays even though multiple studies have found that there is often no connection between abnormalities on x-rays and back pain.

Chemotherapy

Professor Ulrich Abel analyzed the use of chemotherapy for epithelial cancer and published the results in 1989. He found no direct evidence that chemotherapy helps people with advanced carcinoma to survive; only a slight benefit in patients with small-cell lung cancer; and perhaps some slight benefit in those with ovarian cancer.
He said that the belief that chemotherapy can prolong survival is an “opinion based on a fallacy which is not supported by clinical studies.”
High-dose chemotherapy (HDC) is still a treatment of choice, however, for breast cancer unchecked by normal doses, even though a March 2000 study found that HDC held no benefits and even slightly reduced survival rates.

Women and Conventional Medicine

The “Death by Medicine” doctors take special note of the unnecessary procedures practiced on women in America. 19th-century views of women, the idea that women’s reproductive organs were the basis of physical and mental illnesses have leftover influences on medicine today.
Dr. Adriane Fugh-Berman has studied this influence on conventional medicine. She reports that:
  • thousands of “preventive” mastectomies are performed every year
  • more women than men are prescribed drugs
  • women are more often given preventive medications that result in side effects than men
  • one-third of women are given hysterectomies before they’ve even gone through menopause
  • fetal monitoring is common practice even though the CDC doesn’t recommend it, it’s use isn’t supported by research and it may result in higher rates of cesarean section
  • menopause and childbirth are considered medical conditions rather than normal biological practices
  • the one-third of post-menopausal women on synthetic hormones don’t experience heart disease prevention or cognitive benefits but do experience increased risk of cancer, heart disease and stroke
  • Obstetric-gynecologic surgeries represent 23% of all US surgeries performed in 1983, reports the study authors. Cesarean sections take top billing and hysterectomies come in second place.
They estimate that 640,000 cesarean sections are performed each year in the US and that these increase mortality rates 3 to 4 times and disease rates by 20 times compared to vaginal deliveries.

Sick Care System

The “Death by Medicine” doctors say that the overuse of medical testing, technology, surgery and drugs does little to prevent disease and results in the most US deaths.
What is more important to consider, they say, is the practice of preventive  medicine, changes that would address the root causes of disease: stress and its effects on the immune system, a compromised brain/body connection, lack of physical activity, denatured and processed food intake, and exposure to environmental toxins.

New advice on barbarian living, paleo style!

I thought I'd write a post for my brother, Ron, who shall otherwise remain nameless, protecting his identity...

A few things I've learned, since writing the famous Juice Drink Strategy, the cornerstone of most nutritional libraries are these cogent points:

Eliminate all fruit juices from the drink- they are just sucrose = sugar!  Ditch them all- orange, apple, pineapple- whatever!  They are horrible!  Use REAL fruit instead; berries are the best. (Low glycemic load, best ancillary nutrient profile)
Each day, I add a rather small amount of mixed frozen fruits, mixed frozen berries, frozen cherries, one peeled orange or grapefruit, and 1/2 of a banana.  (I've taken to freezing the bananas upon purchase, cut into halves and peeled, to avoid them over-ripening and overloading their sugar content)

What I've ADDED to the drink:
one FULL can of coconut milk- this is key- it increases the satiety level of the drink immensely; also, coconut milk, which includes the oil, is a VERY healthy fat- something lacking hugely in our modern diet.  Trust me on this- coconut milk is key to "leaning out" and getting healthy!

Cod liver oil!!  I personally think this is the MOST important ingredient of all- Vitamin D, vitamin K; you name it- it's like eating liver AMPLIFIED!

Kelp- comes in a powder- just about a tsp. adds a HUGE nutritional wallop!

Green tea- instead of juice, to let the mixture "mix"- also, great nutritionally.

Of course, the frozen spinach and mixed frozen vegetables (brocolli, cauliflower, carrots) are still the mainstay of the drink- about half of the Vitamix canister should be devoted to them each day!

My latest additions are lemon juice, about a Tablespoon, and apple cider vinegar, also 1 TBLSPN.  Both will do wonders to normalize your blood sugar, and enhance your nutrient profile.

OK- this is the PERFECT BREAKFAST!  Fire up your Vitamix each day, drink this drink, and you are the healthiest Barbarian pounding on the gates of Rome that anyone has ever seen!  And make no mistake: America is turning into a modern Rome! We are slip-sliding into corruption and decadence, and it is awful to watch.  Obama is like our modern Nero.

Do you know what the good, traditional Romans did when the corrupt politicos had taken over?  They LEFT Italy, they went out to the countryside, bought estates in the hinterlands, like Spain, and set up self-sufficient communities... which eventually became the feudal beginnings of Medieval Europe, as Rome collapsed.

Rural America is our current "hinterlands".

Rural Cabins are the future!

Paleo song

Everything you need to know about nutrition, in a song, in less than one minute!
